I found an old Singer on a skip and decided I’d make my own messenger bag. I mostly copied my old Northface bag. There’s some permanent marker still on the flap, I must pick some acetone up and see if I can get it to come off.

I thought I’d write something about Oulu’s fixed gear scene in English. There was a good discussion online about how everyone is only following Prolly and other overseas stuff even though we have a most excellent cycling scene here in Finland. The point being – take more pictures, post more online. The snow is finally gone and all the gravel and sand is being swept off the streets. This means you can finally ride light road tires and play polo. The other evening we went to check the local icehockey rinks and it turned out all the rain had melted off most of the remaining ice. The city leaves one hockey rink in place for the summer and we go there to play. The asphalt surface of the rink is getting worse every year, but I quess it is still better than no rink at all.

In 19.-20. May we are celebrating the birthday of our internet forum yksivaihde.net. There is a big party down south, but Finland is a long country and most of us don’t feel like travelling 500km for it. Especially when we were told that if we held the party in Oulu, no one would come this far up north. It is really an insult so we thought we’ll have our own shadow party this year. We’ve planned an alleycat race, Goldsprints, Sauna (naturally!), polo and an open group ride to all the cyclists in Oulu.

Naapurilta kuulin mahtavasta roskalavasta Heinäpäässä, jolla oli kuulemma ompelukone. Piti heti seuraavana aamuna tarkastamaan ja löysin tämän hienon Singerin. Hain Clas Ohlsonilta uuden pistotulpan ja kokeilin konetta, mutta moottori ei oikein jaksanut pyöriä. Isä ja äiti sattuivat kylään melkein samaan aikaan ja vielä suurempana sattumana äiti kertoi, että sen ensimmäinen sähköompelukone oli samanlainen.

Netistä löysin käyttöohjeen, jossa eri voitelukohteet ilmoitettiin, mutta sitä ennen pesin jarrupesuspraylla jokaisen osan johon vain pääsin käsiksi. Vanhat öljyt olivat kuivuneet kivikovaksi rasvaksi, joka esti konetta pyörimästä. Kun jarrupesu sitten haihtui, öljysin liikkuvat osat aseöljyllä samalla kun käsin pyörittelin konetta. Pienen mietinnän jälkeen keksin, miten moottori saadaan sisältä ulos ja putsasin sen erikseen CRC:n kanssa. Hiilet olivat loistokunnossa, joten epäilin ettei koneessa olisi sen enempää laitettavaa. Kasasin koneen ja annoin CRC:n haihtua yön yli ennen kuin kokeilin töpseliä seinään. Aamulla kone lähti pyörimään ja öljyjen levittyä kävi koko ajan paremmin.

Pistotulppa maksoi 2.30e. Koneessa ei ole muuta sähköistä kuin moottori, pedaali ja lamppu, runko on valettua alumiinia ja kaikki liikkuvat osat terästä. Repertuaarista löytyy myös siksak ja muutamat erikoistikit (tosin ohjaimet puuttuvat). Huomenna haen kangaskaupasta lankoja, neuloja, kangasta, ratkojan, mittanauhan ja muutaman puolan. Sitten teen Ninalle kesämekon.

Mukaan löytyy alkuperäiset v-jarrulänget sekä kahva ilman paloja tai vaijeria.
